(CNN) -- North Korean state television started broadcasting footage Thursday of huge crowds assembled in Pyongyang at a national memorial service for the leader Kim Jong Il, who died earlier this month.

The ceremony took place a day after a funeral procession for Kim wove through the snow-laden streets of Pyongyang lined with thousands of wailing mourners.

The video broadcast Thursday showed thick blocks of people gathered in Kim Il Sung Square -- named after the founder of North Korea -- in Pyongyang.

It also carried images of Kim Jong Un, the son and chosen successor of Kim Jong Il, and other officials standing solemnly at the event as Kim Yong Nam, the president of the North Korean parliament, made a speech.

The state-run Korean Central News Agency had reported that the national memorial service would involve gun volleys to be fired in the capital as well as in provincial seats.

"All the people will observe three minutes' silence and all locomotives and ships (those on voyage included) will blow whistles and those units with sirens will sound them all at once," KCNA said.
